  • The abalone shell has higher mechanical strength then conch and giant clam shells.


  • Over organization with 45 degree shear angles in micro structure of Conch shells results in under-optimized mechanical response in compression.
    • Structure shows impressive response in tension.
      • Compression : tension ratio of approx 4 (most ceramics have a ratio in the range of 10)

  • Growth rates, and continuous single growth crystals may attribute to less organization and strength in Giant Clam.


  • Hydration of shells with seawater, increased toughness over time.
